Mika Tajima (B. Los Angeles, CA. Lives and works in New York, NY

Gallery Representation: Pace, Simon Lee (London)

Working in painting, sculpture, and installation, Mika Tajima investigates modes of leisure and productivity, and how the ongoing march of Capitalism and technology affects our behavior and experiences. Her work incorporates technological processes such as jacquard looms, 3D printed plastic, spray paint, jacuzzi jet nozzles, and air flow systems as she finds beautiful ways to transform natural ephemera such as sound and air into works of art. Aesthetically, her work finds roots in Abstract Expressionism and California Minimalism, and even the Finish Fetish school of the early 70s. An artist who is shrewdly aware of the canon of abstract art, Tajima is carving out her own unique footprint with a post-modern contribution to the discussion.

Her work is in the collection of LACMA, The Hammer Museum (LA), San Francisco Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Art and the Hirschorn (DC), amongst others.

A touring mid-career survey at 3 museums in Japan is forthcoming later this year.
